David elkin tells us that one area of concern is parents hurrying their children. Elkind tells us that adults hurry children because they themselves feel hurried. He believes parents are under pressure to perform and succeed in a demanding world. We understand that coupled to this are necessary transitions and family forms to accommodate today"s modern, competitive and changing world. Constant evaluations, decisions and adjustments are necessary. Paid work and concerns about wages and promotions as adults try to provide the best possible life for their families. The feeling of having to keep up with the joneses" aka conspicuous consumer consumption. This is evident in the materialism culture we live in and we are saturated with advertised expectations of fancy vacations, nice homes, clothes, cars etc. Mobility: in western society, the goal is to work towards upward mobility and avoid the negative experience of downward mobility.
