Researcher is immersed in social setting to serve and listen to people: qualitative interviewing. Those that do ethnography or participant observation utilize this. In focus groups, they are interviewed together using a semi-structured format. Reasoning in theory: qualitative research often uses inductive reasoning since they are observing something. These observations allow for one to see patterns and form the framework of the theory to develop and analyze the data: steps: observation > pattern > tentative hypothesis > theory. Why qualitative: it is easier and effective in understanding meanings, the perspectives on meanings of others and their interactions. Related to verstehen: revealing the layers of meaning by probing beneath the surface. For example, one saying a racist comment: description and detail.
