Two conditions: mirror with bowl of candy, no mirror and bowl of candy. Adult leaves, tells child to take only one piece. To see which group of children would obey instructions = on average, people with mirror more likely to obey. Explanation: more self-aware/conscious with mirror, self exists as two processes: one part of active/impulsive component in moment and a re ective part that looks back and evaluates behaviour. From symbolic interactionism: the self is created from outside in; how we present ourselves is who we are. Our thoughts about who we are, and our perceptions of our social identities and personal qualities. Self-awareness (recognize as individual separate from environment and others) Self-knowledge (all tricks we attribute to ourselves) Mirror test (placed in front of baby, how do they respond - recognize itself?) Generally at 18 months - link movements and actions in mirror to themselves. Our understanding of the self" is drawn from symbolic interaction theory.
