Awkward comments, gestures, behaviours disrupt our presentaion of self as socially competant: while these exps are normal - we all have them. They can be discrediing by casing us in a negaive light. Engage in interacional strategies to normalize behavior. To avoid being labeled weird/deviant, & to preserve a posiive self-idenity: We engage in a # of internaional strategies to normalize our behavior. Classic study by c. wright mills on vm (1940) Are moives or reasons ofered to others about our behavior in paricular social contexts. Take the form of raionalizaions, jusiicaions, excuses: vocabularies of moive are learned. In same way all social norms are learned. They are taught to us by others: we learn from family, friends, teachers, etc. That we should be accountable for our behaviour.
