Soc 107 - lecture 9 - apr 3, 2017. These are broad, lifestyle deviances that effectively involve people in lifelong deviant careers. The occasional improprieties that temporarily mark certain individuals as somehow non conforming, awkward, or improper. It is a good strategy to examine what happens when equilibrium is disturbed. The rules broken are seen as more serious. The actor is viewed as having had control over the rule breaking behavior. Shamed individuals felt more responsibility and regret, more anger and disgust with themselves. Shame follows from the violation of moral rules. The emotional state that underlies both embarrassment and shame fundamentally has to do with self presentation. Embarrassment arises when we feel (often incorrectly) that our actual performance falls short of the standard we believe some audience expects. 5 factors are critical in the emergence of feelings of embarrassment. Change can be conveyed through impression management strategies. One can make inferences about others on the basis of appearance.
