Sex: a social determination of male or female on the basis of a set of socially agreed- upon biological criteria. Categorization based on binaries implying diametrical opposites (e. g. opposite sex ) Intersexuality: those with genital, chromosomal, or gonadal characteristics that are not entirely or clearly female or male : medical interventions and institutional regulations used to reinforce and maintain binary (ex. sex verification in sport) Socially constructed: characteristics associated with girls and boys, men and women: definitions assume binary opposition, definitions are diverse and change over time/place. Individuals who identify with the sex/gender they were assigned at birth with or raised in. Transgender: those who identify with a sex/gender different than that assigned at birth or raised in. Ideal masculinity that men are supposed to strive to achieve: requires men to be successful, capable and reliable, assumed to be tied to heterosexuality, supports gender inequality.
