Families: up until recently were defined as mom dad & children, it has widened, these definitions are viewed by government when viewing social policy (mainly financially, influence our lives when we make decisions about our own families. Compassionate care program (2014)(benefits): if family member is dying you can receive benefits for staying and taking care of them (your father/mother, you wife/husband, your child or child of spouse etc. ) Changed it to anyone if you can prove closeness. Osap when parents are not supporting child with $ but make too much for child to get osap. If recipient feels they marry someone & feel their benefits will be taken away they may decide not to get married in fear. The increase in single mother households is because of the welfare policy b/c in order to get welfare you have to just have mother & child in the u. s.
