Document Summary
Social process whereby people undergo development and requires interacting with other people. We need social interaction for: brain, intellectual, social, and physical development ex. if infant/young child deprived of social interaction, their brain development is impaired, their physical development is impacted (don"t develop ne and gross motor skills) Socialization is an active process and interactional. Development from infancy to adulthood, acknowledge importance of biology and genes but emphasize socialization. In terms of healthy development, social interaction is as critical as other basic needs (water, shelter, etc. ) Sociology does not refute importance of biology. Historical and contemporary studies of feral and neglected children. Feral children: discovered to be living in nature without care of adults. Methodological issues - left to care themselves vs. have development delay. Problem: hard to access because based on old records (1800"s or earlier) Early studies suggest social interaction for babies is critical (development of language, physical development)
