In control, either fed both red food dye, or gave them nothing (pale = not given extra food) Looked to see how the parents allocated food to the two chicks. In both controls, they preferenially fed larger chicks. When chicks were both large and red, increased feeding. When chicks were small and red, feeding to large chicks decreased. Mouth colour is someimes designed to make begging chick more visible; some even have uv components.
