What is social psychology: scientific study of affect, behaviours, and cognitions (thought/feelings), are influenced by the presence real or imagined from at least one other person, abc"s of psychology. Garbage bin of psychology - gets all the leftover bits: broad range of topics, conformity, persuasion, group behaviour, predjuice, sexuality, altruistic behaviour, agression, more! It"s not common sense: lazarsfeld 1949, summarizes a bunch of reports. Soldiers from rural bkg were in better spirits than were soldiers from urban bkg : but actually found the opposite, prejudgements. Course goals: content of socpsy, research in socpsy. Impact of research on socpsy theory: have to know the wrong stuff to know how we got the right stuff, application of theory and research in real world situations. Experiments: done in labs v controlled conditions, cover stories & confederates, e. g. Example of an experiment: diehl and stroebe 1987.
