A set of mathematical and statistical techniques. A way of understanding how correlated traits are. Wanted to know empirically which basic traits are fundamental. Task the 18. 000 traits and took out all of the synonyms and antonyms: ended up with 400-500. Narrowed down the list of words to only 100. Asked people to rate how they believed they were within a trait. E(cid:454)plain the patterns of intercorrelation dimension: all reflect the same underlying factor, mathematically model what these factors are. Does not find (cid:858)real(cid:859) things: hypothetical constructs. Does not identify factors: does not label or name the factors. Results depend on the measures used: what kind of measures are you looking at, can be used to analyze tests. Results depend on parameters: orthogonal vs. non-orthogonal factors, onl(cid:455) things that aren(cid:859)t intercorrelated. Reliable: stable over time and observable. Used by both theorists and bystanders: things ordinary people are able to recognize. March 17th 2017: they need to appear everywhere.
