Diagnostic labels/categories to describe and classify presenting problems: simply names, that are defined by the criteria of the dsm, the names in the dsm don"t name an illness, doesn"t identify causes. Helps select treatments known to be effective on certain symptoms: diagnostic labelling helps with choosing treatments, once we"ve labelled symptoms, there"s a narrower range for therapeutic options. Anti-depressants or anxiety drugs, some who weren"t diagnosed, take them because it helps. Criteria leads to fads" in diagnosis: clinicians can start giving out names, much more, than they should, multiple personality disorder (did) in 1980s and 90s. It"s been very popular, however between the 70s and 90s, there were a ton of cases caused, people were looking for it and wanted to give them this appeal: adhd and autism in the 2000s. Disorder labels, there was a lot of argument of how prevalence that they are their prevalence has skyrocketed.
