We don"t know the causes of any psychological disorders in the dsm. We don"t understand why our psychological pharmaceutical drugs or psychotherapeutic treatments work. Ethical considerations & the inability to accurately reproduce mental disorders in animals" restrict research. Impairment criterion: symptoms that impair social, occupational or other domains of functioning. Not all impaired people have a mental illness (i. e. terrorists) Personal distress criterion: symptoms that cause a patient to have significant concerns. Many patients with mental illnesses do not see their distress as an issue (i. e. schizophrenia) Many situations that cause people distress are not labeled as mental illnesses (i. e. procrastination) *there"s no clear line between normalcy and disorder. *many disorders in the dsm are only there because there was pressure from pharmaceutical companies/parents with rowdy kids. Abnormality caused by physical defects in the brain. Began with the relationship between syphilis and mental symptoms. Candidate disorders: anxiety, did, somatic symptom disorder.
