Our knowledge of who and what we are. Understanding/ being aware of how you are feeling. Originally used in non-human consciousness research (gallup, 1970) Bugged about having things on their eyebrow, they tried to take it off of themselves not on the mirror --> self- awareness. By the age of 2 almost all children can recognize themselves. All forms of apes can pass the mark test all by certain ages. Moms come into lab with babies from 9 months - 2 years. Once the researches know how long they"ll touch their nose they place them in front of the mirror to see if they"ll touch more. At 18 months huge increase in nose touching. At about 18 months they will avoid looking at themselves. Will differentiate themselves if you ask them to. "i am different from jenn because i have blonde hair and she has brown" Don"t have the idea that personality can show two sides within the same person.
