Self understanding: ties to cognitive development. Self recognition: identi es your own identity and that appearance does not change into someone else. We ask questions about who they are and in this research we combine and discover that children describe themselves with 5 basic characteristics (up to 7 years old) Pre-operational stage in cognitive development: thinking about simple and very concrete things by focusing on external instead of internal. Middle to late childhood: shift to internal characteristics. Example: i sometimes lose my temper but i am better now : spontaneous use of social references, more realistic. Become more complex thinkers and deal with more information at once.
