Goal od intelligence is establishment and maintenance of cognitive equilibrium. Understanding the world around us with no sense of confusions. Cognitive disequilibrium: its so uncomfortable to be in cognitive equilibrium. Motivates kids to be learning on their own. But within the confines of what they already know. An organized pattern of thought or action to interpret ones experiences. Cognitive development = development of increasingly complex schemes. Adjusting to what is going on in the environment. When new experiences are incorporated with your pre-existing ideas. Adaptation to a new object 1: assimilation works! Adaptation to a new object: assimilation doesn"t work! Take all of your knowledge and hierarchy of them. Cognitive development is motivated by a sense of discomfort when the balance between what we know and what we experience is disrupted. Certain experiences are required for unfolding of cognitive skills. Goal of intelligence is to create a balance between what we kow and what we experience.
