PSYCH 1F03 Lecture 11: Influence of Others Part One
Document Summary
Your thoughts and behaviours are influenced by the people around you. What may initially seem obvious isn"t always the case. Behaviours performed in a group are different from behaviours performed individually. Norman triplett is credited for performing the first formal study of social psychology: Observed the cyclists perform faster when competing against each other than when they"re racing individually against a clock. In another study, 40 children play a game that involved turning a fishing reel as soon as possible; those who played in pairs turned the reel faster than those who were alone. Audience: a group of people watching an individual perform a task. Social facilitation: the increased performance that occurs in the presence of co- actors or an audience. The presence of others can sometimes hinder a performance as well. Robert zajonc"s research offered a solution to the problem of social facilitation. Suggested that the important factor to consider is that the presence of others increases arousal.
