PSYCH 1F03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Procedural Memory, Sketchpad, Wok
Document Summary
Attention is de ned by the ability to selectively focus, consciously or unconsciously, on relevant stimuli in our environment in order to navigate successfully and economically through daily experiences. Stimulus features and contextual information play a large role in how attention is directed and the limitations of attention are highlighted by instances of failure to attend to salient environment information. Original ideas on attention suggested that focusing is central attention, however, further work has indicated that mechanisms of ltering and analysis play a strong role. The role of memory is invaluable to all daily functioning and processes such as encoding, storage, and retrieval are essential to successful memory operations. Long term memory is a complex network marked by semantic organization; retrieval is aided by cues and general knowledge based on years of experience guides much of what we do and how we function.
