Document Summary

Goes into detail about the guardian"s education. Socrates wants to remove poems along with certain types of stories: poets are problematic because of their flowery, strange language. Control types of music they listen to and their physical regime. Children replicate the world around them they learn things by observing and experiencing, not just what is told to them. They don"t know what things mean, they just understand the importance of it (example: accidentally dropping the f-word) Children pick up and learn good and bad things before they even understand what good and bad means. We do all this censoring too we don"t tell them horrible stories or expose them to bad music. We do this to shape their character to make them good people. And so, if the guardians are going to protect out cities, they need to be the best citizens. This all reinforces the idea that justice is character. Book 3 is about how we shape that character.
