Document Summary

Sexual harassment is usually (often) a workplace issue. Courts are clear about the effects (consequences) of sexual harassment in the workplace: Quid pro quo harassment: sexual demands of a superior are tied to economic costs/gains such as promotion, salary, or continued employment. Hostile environment: may interfere with individual"s work performance or productivity. Courts are less clear about the definition of sexual harassment itself. If courts cannot easily define sexual harassment itself, organizations are left to identify sexual harassment on their own. Problem: sexual harassment is difficult to define, and so it is difficult to identify. Keyton and rhodes discuss the proposal that a social-sexual continuum of behaviour exits in the workplace (p. 131) which ranges as follows: friendly behaviour, flirting behaviour, sexual harassment, in light of #metoo we can add: sexual assault. Saul: stop thinking so much about sexual harassment" . Saul agrees with leyton and rhodes that sexual harassment" is difficult to define, and often difficult to identify.
