Thoracic cage: classified by sternum, 12 thoracic vertebrae & 12 ribs. Diaphragm: musculotendinous septum that separates thoracic cavity from abdomen. Costochondral junction: points at which ribs join their cartilages (not palpable) Suprasternal notch: hollow u shaped depression just above sternum, in bw clavicles. Sternum: ( breast bone ) 3 parts - manubrium, body & xiphoid process. Sternal angle: (angle of louis) articulation of the manubrium & sternal body. Costal angle: angle formed where the left & right costal margins meet at the xiphoid process. Vertebra prominens: starting at top of spine, flex neck & feel most prominent bony protrusion - is c7. Spinous processes: able to count down the vertebrae. spinous processes align with ribs only up until t4, where processes begin to angle downwards. Inferior border of scapula: lower tip is usually at level of 7th or 8th rib. 12th rib: palpate midway bw spine & patient"s side to identify free tip of 12th rib.
