Inspect the anterior and posterior chest: notice rate and rhythm of breathing, notice shape and configuration of spinous processes, note lifts and heaves, anterior-posterior vs transverse ratio. Palpation - posterior: assesses for symmetric posterior chest expansion at the level of t9 or t10.
