Water is very abundant in the body: magnets, radiofrequency. Use of specific frequencies to image the body (like tuning into a radio station: gradient coils. Used to manipulate the magnetic field & help localize the signal from the tissue. They create the noise within the machine as they turn on/off: rf coils. Coil patient has overtop of their head (image) Coils are used to deliver specific frequencies to the body, sometimes used to pick up specific frequencies from the body, some coils do the job of both. Has a mirror on the top so they can look up into the mirror so they can see into the room (have the illusion of a little more space) Need to educate patient about the noise - given headsets to help dampen the noise. Noise generated by the machine is at a decibel level that falls right underneath the pain threshold - really need to take good care of the patient.
