Protocol - set of rules, select the parameters at the imaging console: Variety of imaging options & data acquisition methods. All protocols are judged on how they demonstrate anatomy & pathology. Short scan time - always trading length of time for high cnr, snr, & sr. Motion ruins the image - more than any other modality. Just breathing alone can take some quality away from the image. We try to have the best of the 4 characteristics - however, you cannot always pull this off - have to go for the one you need the most. Rare to optimize 1 of the 4 without compromising another 1 or 2 of them. Defined as: the ratio of amplitude of signal received to the average amplitude of the background noise. Signal is the voltage induced in receiver coil by precession of coherent magnetization in the transverse plane at te (time to echo)
