The rise of the cio: breakthrough in the us. Craft union resistance: sit-down strikes, formation of the cio, canada. Relationship b/w canada and usa is different: 1930"s canada was conservative, us was left winged. Big new deal goal: to keep economy running during depression: unions were seen to do that. Sidney hillman: leader of garment workers union: very important union. John lewis: leader of the minors union (mining) 1934-1935: major organizing waves in the usa in the big key mass production industries: auto, steel, rubber, electrical & chemicals. Industrial unions hit a big roadblock (2: 1) recognition: employer recognizing union as bargaining agent (big loss of employers, 2) craft unions: remain the dominant force and didn"t believe in turning the labour movement into industrial law. A lot of them said industrial workers can be replaced. And they wanted to be in control. Afl wanted to keep everything in the craft union model.
