Difficult climate: lethargy & division in movement. Red scare: corporate welfare, company unions. Works councils: 1930"s surprising effects. Communists: orientation & motivation, early 1930"s: workers" unity league (wul) The ccf: cooperative commonwealth federation, regina manifesto. Industrial unionism = breakthrough in the u. s: new deal & legislation. Economy is starting to look different, looking more like 20"s-30"s. Climate for organized labour was not good. Established movement went into a shell (didn"t want to have to do with anything) Safe and sane unionism: an attempt to distance labour movement from the radicals. Targets communism: red scare: anything that talks about worker rights is under suspicion. Businesses replacing a lot of benefits that unions deliver: workers thinking their don"t need a union. Corporate welfare: small benefits given to workers so they feel they"re being looked after: pensions renamed the golden handcuffs. Locked you into a friendly relationship w/ company. Company unions (works councils) an organization that"s company controlled but represented workers.
