The case of clever hans: famous horse than could apparently do arithmetic and counting, people believed they could send their animals to school for human. Intelligence training protocol: discovered that the horse only knew answer if trainer or researcher knew answer, turned out to be answer of queuing unconsciously hold breath or gesture. Why should we wash our hands before surgery: 1800s, pregnant mothers would die due to puerperal fever, doctors would not wash hands or lab coats, miasma theory: disease was caused by putrid environment or atmosphere. Smell in air caused infection: clean air = clean environment: 1846- semmelweis. Mortality rate was higher among medical patients than midwives in same setting. Medical students didn"t wash hands after autopsies (no understanding of bacteria) He implemented hand washing before births and death rates dropped dramatically. Policy did not change on hand washing until 100 years later because did not understand mechanism. Implementation of lab coats, gloves, and antibiotics in labour wards.
