Document Summary

Purpose: introduction to hthsci 1cc6 and review of cell physiology. Read: chapter 1 the human body: an orientation, chapter 3 cells: the living units. There are four concepts, known as the cell theory. A cell is the basic structural and functional unit of living organisms. When you define cell properties, you define the properties of life. The activity of an organism depends on both the individual and collective activities of its cells. According to the principle of complementarity of structure and function, the biochemical activities of cells are dictated by their shapes and forms, and by the relative number of their specific subcellular structures. Plasma membrane is semi-permeable barrier between the cell and it(cid:859)s e(cid:374)(cid:448)i(cid:396)o(cid:374)(cid:373)e(cid:374)t. Fluid mosaic model depicts the plasma membrane as double layer of phospholipids with proteins. Some cells are loose in the body (blood, sperm, immune), while others are in tight knit communities (junctions)
