Norms of behaviour primarily based around expectations for middle-aged adults. Our concept of normal is based on certain things. Normal = each person is their own project, we must all always be striving for self improvement. Diagnostic differences when it comes to childhood (less so for old age), but it"s tricky - these are periods of immense change. Much of the way we diagnose mental disorder is on patterns. This makes the process of diagnosing children tricky. Mental health of both children and older adults seen as unique in terms of challenges and features. Ex. emphasis on 3rd party reporting - bring in somebody else to the conversation before diagnosis. When you bring is somebody else you"re bringing in a new perspective - these people may have their own opinions on behaviour (ex. In 19th century childhood was invented" as a period of leisure. We imagine it as a period of learning and a period of play.
