Paraphilic Disorders
• DSM-5 stresses most people with unusual sexual interests do not have
disorders
o It wasn’t atypical for someone with ‘odd’ sexual interests to be
diagnosed with a mental disorder; however, this has somewhat
changed
• There are some exceptions
o Those who feel personal distress about their interest, not merely
distress resulting from society’s disapproval (i.e. homophobic
society)
o Sexual desire/behaviour that involves another person’s
psychological distress or injury, or desire for sex involving unwilling
persons or persons unable to give legal consent
▪ This would suggest that pedophilia is a mental disorder
▪ Might be used as a way to shift the responsibility of rape (a
rapist is mentally ill, not responsible for their own actions)
• Examples: exhibitionistic disorder (people who want to have sex in public
places), fetishistic disorder (people who are drawn to specific objects),
frotteuristic disorder (desire to touch/rub against people in crowd places),
paedophilic disorder, sexual masochism disorder, sexual sadism disorder,
transvestic disorder, and voyeuristic disorder
o Sexual masochism disorder & sexual sadism disorder – people
argue that those involved are willing participants and that it is not a
mental illness
• Should we really be lumping these things together? Does transvestic
disorder belong alongside paedophilic disorder?
o Transvestic disorder – men and women clothing is socially
constructed; to be diagnosable, the participant(s) must feel distress
about such behaviour
o We recognize something as paedophilia as a serious crime
Gender Dysphoria
• DSM attempts to tread water carefully, lots to be concerned about
• Describes gender Dysphoria as: strong desire to be treated as gender
different to how society treats that person, or to be rid of one’s sex
