GEOG 1HB3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Luxury Vehicle, Central Place Theory, Centrality
Document Summary
Consider the roles/ functions of urban centres as: Places which consume food & other goods and services. Places which process & produce goods and materials. Urban centres are functionally connected to other urban centres and to the surrounding non-urban (rural) areas. Many of the connections between urban centres are related to their absolute and relative locations . Whether it is centrally (strategically) located (or not) Efficiency of location is associated with an urban centre"s site and/or situation. Along a coast, at the head of a bay/estuary, at a river crossing, etc. Urban centres are interconnected with other centres in a system. Urban system: each urban centre contributes by providing goods and services for other centres and by consuming the goods and services of other centres. We can use central place theory to explain the spatial distribution of urban centres with respect to their size and function.
