Document Summary
The evolution of people first language is the answer to this conundrum people first language always acknowledges that a person with disabilities is a person, first and foremost. It advocates that a person should not be defined by a medical condition unless it is relevant to the conversation, at hand. For example, we wouldn"t find it relevant to say the blue-eyed boy ate candy so why would we need to say the disabled girl was wearing a red shirt today? instead, The boy ate candy and the girl wore a red shirt would suffice. Flat entrances are not just for wheelchairs: traffic moves more quickly, easier to clear snow, easier to move cargo, better for people with baby buggies. When a device as simple as a door has to come with an instruction manual - even a one-word manual - then it is a failure .
