To (cid:498)represent(cid:499)- (re + present) suggests a kind of pun: To present again (cid:523)and again(cid:524) so there(cid:495)s the implication of repeated presentation of something or an idea and a hint of its mechanics. And to represent politically (as in one member of a community standing in for all the others as a political representative) Our system of signs, language, is one of the most fundamental systems of representation: we often use the term discourse to identify a linguistic system or regime of representation. An actor in a lab coat-> interconnectivity of science and health. An actor in a priest robe-> interconnectivity of religion and prayer. Fundamental argument is that (cid:498)orientalism(cid:499) is a powerful and historically persistent (cid:498)discourse(cid:499)- which means the set of terms and concepts that defines a field of knowledge and the objects of study that compose it. Orientalism shaped european understandings not only of the middle east, but of itself.
