COMMERCE 1BA3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Job Satisfaction, Motivation, Organizational Learning
Document Summary
Job satisfaction has a number of consequences: absence from work, turnover, performance, organizational citizenship behaviour, customer satisfaction and pro t. There is more to satisfaction than just pay. Less satis ed employees are more likely to be absent. Satisfaction with the content of the work is the best predictor of absenteeism. Absence-satisfaction connection is not very strong: some organizations control attendance to in uence absence more than satisfaction, norm for absenteeism and the absence culture might have a stronger effect. Turnover refers to resignation from an organization and it can be very expensive. Research indicates a moderately strong but imperfect connection between job satisfaction and turnover. Why satis ed people sometimes quit: shocks can contribute to intentions to leave, employee assistance programs often help with dealing with shocks. Why dissatis ed people stay: commitment to mission of organization, employee is embedded in the community, weak job market. Research has found that job satisfaction is associated with higher job performance.
