Based around a chorus, which sang and danced in unison. The chorus was split into 2 parts (strophe and antistrophe) The chorus was important for telling the story. The chorus often wore costumes that were either frightening or outlandish. A 4-day festival involving theatrical performances at athens. Honoured the god dionysus (very popular with the athenians) The procession: began with a statue of dionysus. The tribute was brought into the theatre as part of the procession. The orphans of athens" war dead would march in the procession. Prizes for best tragedy and comedy were awarded by a panel of 10 judges who were citizens randomly chosen by lot. It was unclear whether the women could watch the plays or not. Most plays at the city dionysia were tragedies. Each trilogy was followed by a satyr play to lighten the mood. Three trilogies were performed each year at the city dionysia. Routinely retold the same stories, but in new ways.
