Document Summary

Greek tragedies reflective of greater mythological/religious greek world. The only plays we have now that are considered tragedies take place at athens. Pompe (procession) = the way dionysus came across. >first to have iliad and odyssey written down. >statue of dionysus brought to athens on boat wagon where he watches all the plays. >3 tragedians, and 5 comedians (sometimes 3) competing against each other. >each tragedian involves 3 tragedies and 1 satyr play. Satyr play serves to alleviate the heaviness of the atmosphere. Follows the tragic theme, but more comedic. >wealthy citizens finance the choruses as a public liturgy. Huge expense, same as donating a warship. >can take up to 6 months to train a chorus. Performances associated with festivals of dionysus held in athenian agora. Flat, circular area (orchestra) surrounded by bleachers. Wooden bleachers match the topography of the hill. Large open playing space for actors =orchestra. >not sure why it"s there or what it does.
