King mithridates of pontus (ne turkey)--massacres 80000 romans, sulla set to lead war, rufus transfers command to marius. Sulla in campania with 6 legions--persuades soldiers, not officers. Sulla seizes rome--declares sulpicius, marius, and other hostes, sulpicius killed, marius flees to. Cons l. cinna: takes up cause of sulpicius, marius returns. Reign of terror: marius and cinna made consuls for 86 (marius 7x) marius dies. 84: cinna plans to march against sulla; mutiny-->cinna murdered. 85: sulla and mithridates at stalemate--greece, makes quick peach with mithridates, extracts money from greece/asia. 83-82: sulla arrives at brundisium--fights his way north (samnites)
