Document Summary
Combustion: combustion reactions release energy, chemical reaction between a fuel and an oxidant, reactants are oxidant and oxygen, products are carbon dioxide, water, and energy, rapid combustion, accompanied by both production of heat and light. Ex. burning match: normally used for heating. Common to use fossil fuels: slow combustion, takes place at low temperatures. Ex. cellular respiration: gives us energy to do things, involves burning/metabolism of sugars, carbohydrates, and fats. System vs. surroundings: system, three types, open system. Both material and energy are allowed to exchange between the system and the surroundings: closed system. Energy can exchange (usually in the form of heat) but material cannot: isolated system. Neither material or energy can exchange: surroundings, anything not part of the system. Internal energy = e: change in total energy = u. Energy can be transferred using either path, or a combination: limiting one path makes the energy transfer through another.
