Document Summary

In a combustion reaction, there is a chemical reaction between a fuel and an oxidant. These types of combustion are normally used for heating with fuels like methane, oil, or other fossil fuels: slow combustion, which takes place at low temperatures, as in cellular respiration in the body. This gives us energy to perform many different tasks, like running, and often involves burning or metabolism of sugars, carbohydrates, and fats. 2. 4 system versus surroundings: a system is fairly arbitrary and we define what a system is in order to best suit the situation we are dealing with. Anything that is not part of the system is considered the surroundings: there are three types of systems, open system, where both energy and material are allowed to exchange between the system and the surroundings. Energy could escape as heat and liquid could evaporate: closed system, where energy can exchange, usually in the form of heat, but we prevent material from exchanging.
