Document Summary

Energy metabolism energy metabolism makes atp to power cellular function from energy in food. Atp metabolism creates heat which warms our body. Atp consumption: movement + membrane transport + mol. synthesis. 2 general processes in atp substrate level phosphorylation oxidative phosphrylation glucose oxidation; glycosis, linking step, krebs cycle, oxidative phsophyrlation not the only way to make atp. Glycolysis + linking step ends with making 2 pyruvate pyruvate enters mitochondrion and becomes acetyl co-a gluconeogenesis: some tissues can take pyruvate and reverse it to glucose but not in muscles, usually happens in liver. Krebs cycle acetyl-coa enters krebs in mitochondrial matrix makes a lot of nadh + fadh2 = reducing equivalents= they gain e- and can transfer these into the electron transport chain. Oxidative phosphorylation (etc) when nadh donate electron they become nad+ and become oxidized fadh2 = fad protons transfer energy to complexes.
