Barbs allow space between feathers when birds raise wings and minimize resistance. Birds can have minimum downstroke and large upstroke in this way. Primary control the air under the secondary feathers to generate the lift. Some birds have a thumb allowing birds to have a steep liftoff angle. Why some birds can take off at a steep angle bc the thumb lets them decrease turbulence behind them and take off at a steep angle. Ostrich cant fly but eagles can, so just having feathers isn"t enough to make you fly. Generate lift quickly as possible to escape from predator. Bird half reptile half avian - can see modern bird. Trying to centralize all mass to aid in flight. Flight muslces on inserd on keeled sternum - gives them one major boney structure to support all flight. All force is exerted on the keeled sternum.
