Natural selecion results in the most opimal phenotype: natural selecion is not able to opimize all aspects of a trait due to geneic correlaions and various types of constraint (itness trade-ofs, historical, formal, temporal) Fitness trade-ofs is a compromise between traits in terms of how those traits are adapted for the environment. Limitaion for becoming bipedal is the birth canal is constrained by pelvis. Large brain that is constrained with in mind that we need to come through the birth canal. Because selecion acts on many traits as once. Sickle cell anemia: reduced oxygen transport versus malaria resistance. Morning sickness: mothers feel sick but potenial beneit to the fetus: creates uterine environment that"s good for the fetus. Occurs when selecion favouring alleles for one trait causes a correlated but subopimal change in an allele for another trait. During evoluion, reducion in jaw size associated with increased size of skull led to subopimal tooth arrangements in hums, including wisdom teeth.
