This lecture covers chapter 12: pg 302-308; 311-319; 325-326. Next class and the one after that we will finish the hhe (how humans evolved) readings and cover other material that is not in the textbook. Tool use mode 1, 2, and 3. Probably used a wide range of approaches to collect, extract, and hunt for food. This approach to collecting food probably influenced society and behaviour. Early hominins probably lived in fairly large multi-male and multi-female groups. Sexual dimorphism decreased, brain size increased, body sized increased, juvenile period increased, longer learning time. Actual divergence times probably pre-date the oldest fossil. Time of extinction probably post-date the newest fossil. The pleistocene epoch started 1. 8 million years ago and involved a cooling trend that started in the miocene ~6 million years ago. We are in an interglacial period now. Lower pleistocene is from 1,800,000 900,000 years ago. Middle pleistocene is from 900,000 130,000 years ago: began with massive glaciation.
