Document Summary

Among 3 billion bp in our personal genome, only 2% of that dna will code for functional proteins or small regulatory rna molecules. There is great variation in our genome and evolution has led to alternate alleles or variations of specific genes. Even though there are two alleles of a gene per person, many haplotypes of that allele can exist. This has led to genetic variation across individuals and populations. It is the expression of the variations in dna sequences that produce cell type specific proteomes that are important for vital cellular processes. Within multicellular organisms, the cellular proteins are driven by different transcriptional programs that are able to direct different cells to engage in specific functions or associations with other cells or even tissues. Ex: white blood cells are able to move in blood vessels in order to engage and monitor for infection, inflammation and pathogens and can induce an appropriate response to these threats.
