Brief historical overview on development of criminology. Offer comparison of different overarching perspectives on crime. Deviance attributed to supernatural forces: perceived the world in god"s eyes and followed the bible the idea of heaven and hell. Trepination open the person skull to free spirit (drilling a hole) sometimes effective and swelling occur on brain and they acted erratically, other times they died due to infection. Every society believes they have free will, before there wasn"t and god dictated if you did or not, or the demons commanded you. People have free will to choose criminal/lawful solutions to meet basic needs of life (maslows) Criminal solutions may seem attractive since they put in a little work and get a large payoff: crime pays better than non criminal behaviour, fear of punishment deters crime. Relationship b/w crime and punishment needed to be fair: severe, certain and swift punishments work best. Which would lead ppl to view system as illegitimate.
