Document Summary

Men and women need each other to survive. Increasing importance of male wage (dependence on men"s earnings) Creation of the oven, washing machine, fridge. Women"s labor moved from producers to consumers. Lightened women"s load and less visible and less valued. What it meant to be a good true woman. The rise of women"s employment (and the dual income family) Mother"s wage = 41% of total family earnings. 29-37% of wives earn more than their husbands. Once, a woman reaches this, she tries to neutralize the deviance. When men and women are not too off from each other in income they do more equal housework = better off. When women earn more she will do more housework to neutralize this. Big gap -> she will do more housework. Dealing with the private sphere is the last step. We need policy to help mother;s balance better. With young educated people we see more shifts in dividing it more equitable.
