Document Summary

By introducing extrinsic rewards, you can limit, reduce and sometimes destroy intrinsic motivation. We have to distinguish the short term and long-term effects of praise. If you"re a teacher or coach and repeatedly use praise, the long-term effects may change: the danger is you"re shifting the kids focus from something they"re doing because they"re challenging. Vs doing them because the adult/authority wants them to do it and rewards them for it. Maybe: gave prof a gribouillis drawing saying it"s a flying chair , prof would praise him constantly for him, would compare him to marc chagall your painting has the same ethereal essence as a chagall painting . Prof noticed that as he was going on and on with the praise, nephew"s brother looked uncomfortable. Sometimes the praise you receive increases your motivation and sometimes the praise you receive makes you feel embarrassed or flat.
