A goal is a mental representation of something you want to happen/avoid. To follow through on our goals, we need: clear unambiguous standards cannot be in conflict with other goals. Monitor behaviour in relation to the goal and observe any discrepancies (and then make adjustments accordingly) Use self control resources evidence that our a capacity to exercise self control is limited. There"s a reservoir of self control we can draw on personal limits. When you draw on a lot of self control eg. during a physical task, Individual differences exist cognitive task, delay of gratification task, suppression of emotion task, and then are given a subsequent task requiring self control, you won"t do as well. Most of us are already maxed out on our self control resources. In order of importance (most important to least): self control resources, standards, monitoring.
