PSYC 215 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Bill Morneau, Acne Vulgaris, Silent Treatment
Document Summary
Some things are considered normal in our culture, and abnormal in other cultures. It is normal for us to eat noodles with a knife and fork, and to eat burgers with our hands, and not the other way around. This may be considered strange in other countries or cultures. There are right ways and wrong ways to eat, though people are more or less aware of them. Influence due to desire to avoid criticism, disapproval, rejection, etc. Prescriptive norms: perceptions of what behaviors are approved of or frowned upon. Conformity: changing one"s behavior or beliefs in response to real or imagined pressure from others. Each country has a limited range of clothing that is acceptable for us to wear. If we stray too far from this limit, we tend to get negative reactions from others. E. g. , kissing someone twice on the cheek when you meet up with them.
