Expansion of eu to the east did not erase communist legacy. Part of the reason why transition paradigm is incomplete. Any change in authoritarian regime means democracy is on the way. Can trace the evolution of politics over time. Key moments in time that define a legacy. Threat of soviet intervention in eastern bloc countries removed in 1989. Resistance to communist regime centres on solidarity movement. When threat of soviet intervention is lifted (perestroika/glasnost), it begins a life of its own. Movement"s legislation was the beginning of the end of communist gov"t. Solidarity wins all contested seats in 1989 partial elections. Transition impacted negatively by lack of fully functioning political parties. Total of 29 different parties after 1991 election -> 5 major parties. 1993 election -> divided between two major parties, left and right. 2005 transfer of power to law and justice party (right) Just prior to 2005 poland had entered the eu.
